Our project: Fast Finishers
IB programme:
In Elbio we work with the IB programme, but... What is the IB programme?
Joaquin: What is it?
The IB programme is a programme that promotes the qualities of a lifelong learner, that teaches critical and independent thinking and develop the skills and self-confidence they need to prosper and make a difference. It consists of six transdisciplinary themes, but for this presentation we have focused on just one, which is:
Where we are in time and space
Guadalupe: Key concepts:
Change: it has guided us through this idea of how and why things are changing
Cause: we have reflected upon why things are the way they are
Reflection: we had to think about how we know what we know and support our research with some clear evidence to become better learners.
Catalina: Central idea:
The central idea is how the evolution of the planet is connected to different factors
Lines of inquiry:
Strategies to achieve a more peaceful society.
This line of research guided us through the entire project, and it is also the goal we want to achieve with our project in Elbio.
Franco: IB attributes connected to the unit:
Knowledgeable: intelligent and well informed.
Inquirers: a person who asks a lot of questions
Thinker: people who take the initiative applying critical and creative thinking skills
What did we investigate?
Franco: Concept of society:
Our definition of society is a community or group of people having traditions, institutions, and interests, in the case of the school the members are the students, the teachers and the staff.
Catalina: Our concept of peace:
We did some research in different dictionaries to create our own definition of peace. We agreed that is:
A period of time without violence or wars between people or groups of people in which they live in complete harmony.
Clara: Protest songs:
In class we worked with protest songs. The goal of this songs is to denounce some social or political injustice. The first protest song we listened at school was If I Can Dream from Elvis Presley. This song is about of the wish for a better world, a world where people can live in peace and harmony
Franco: Exchange with Tomás Moro school:
We made a zoom with a school from Ecuador named Tomás Moro. We shared the ideas that we do in our schools to achieve a more peaceful society, in their school they have a project named En Mi Cole No Pasa.
Joaquin: Meeting with children from Colombia:
Children of form 4 talked with other children from Colombia, from a school calles José Asuncion Silva. They share ideas of how resolve fights in a peaceful way, also they talked
about how to achieve a better coexistence.
Clara: MyOn books:
On class we read two books on MyOn to improve our research during the project. The names of the book are Smart Research Strategies and Collect your thoughts.
Guadalupe: Presentation skills:
We watch a video called Schooled by kids: presentation skills in were we learned how to do a well presentation
Clara: MYP Exhibition
We went to high school to see some projects from 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade. They created various products to implement at Elbio.
Franco: Our Team Contract:
These is the team contract that we create, these are the rules we must respect (explain the team contract)
Team roles: Catalina: My name is Catalina I'm the speaking manager of the group and I'm in charge that all the members are speaking in English.
Joaquin: My name is I'm the It manager of the group and I'm in charge of helping in things related to technology such as the presentation.
Guadalupe: My name is I'm the supply manager of the group and I'm in charge of bringing and taking things to the group.
Clara: My name is I'm the communicator of the group and I'm in charge of communicating things to the teacher.
Franco: My name is I'm the timekeeper of the group and I'm in charge of controlling and organizing the time of the group.
Clara: The problem we identified at Elbio:
We realize that problems usually start when some children finish their work and start talking to those who don't.
Our project: Fast Finishers
Clara: We decided that the best idea would be to give activities to the children who finished their work while the other children still working.
Joaquin: We made 3 games:
-word search
-anagrams, in which you need to order the letters of a word.
-find the words, in which they give you letters, and you need to find all the words you can
Also, we made a webpage, the address is https://fastfinishers.blogspot.com/, in where you can watch the games and other interesting things.
Guadalupe: How does it help to promote peace?
It helps to promote peace because the children who finished their work will not talk to those who didn't finish, so the class will be relaxed, and the children that doesn't finish will be able to finish their work without being disturbed.
The process
Joaquin: Other ideas: Before this idea of the project, we have others. The first idea was to reward kids that make good things, but we realize that it will be very difficult to implement.
Catalina: The games: After having the idea of the project, we made the games. The first game we made was Find the words and after the wordsearch. Our idea was to only do these games, but the teacher told us that we need to make more games, so we do the anagrams.
Franco: The problem with the printer: The next thing we needed to do was to print the activities, but no one have a printer that works, so we went to a printing house.
How do we implement it: After printing the activities we talk with the teachers from 1ºC, 2ºA and 3ºD of when we could present our project in their class. When we presented it, we explained each of the activities and we gave them to the teachers.
The change from PowerPoint to Canva: When we finished the PowerPoint, we realize that it doesn't look good, so we made a Canva with the same things.
Feedback:
These are the question that we ask to the children and the answers:
G: Did you like the project?
C: Do you think that with our project we can make a more peaceful society?
G: Would you like to continue doing these kinds of activities?
C: What game did you like the most?
G: What other activities would you like to do?
Clara: Conclusion of the Feedback:
Most of the children liked the project, and other loved it. They told us that they like to continue doing the activities, because it makes the class calmer and fun. Also, the teachers love it, and we have some videos that said her opinion (Here is the video)
Catalina: After viewing the feedback, we think that our product was successful
Clara: What we would change from our project:
We would like to add more games like labyrinth and create games online, also we would like to add something that says the difficulty of the activity so the teacher can choose an activity according to the child.
Catalina: Problems we had during the project:
We didn't have a lot of big problems, but one of the biggest was to choose the template, because we had two options, and we didn't know which one to choose so we vote, and we select the template we have now.
